Strengths Based Social Work

In 2005 Creative Training Network contracted Rodger Jack to research, develop and write a short course using a strengths based social work approach to initial assessment sessions. Once developed we located and chose a small group of experienced trainers to pilot the two day workshop course. The initial response was very positive and encouraging and this enabled a full trainer review and further content development. The duration of the workshop was increased to three days in 2007. Subsequent delivery and further feedback and reviews have seen the course developed further.

The three day workshop is targeted specifically for those who are working in social work type positions in the NGO sector. The facilitation style and practice approach developed through this workshop is a Strengths-Based Approach with the theme - “Partnering with clients, hearing their wisdom and noticing what happens”. As an introduction to best practice it provides a solid grounding for practice awareness and further learning. Participants gain an understanding of the usefulness and application of assessment and intervention planning from a strengths based practice approach to enable the undertaking of thoughtful and considered intervention.

This workshop is able to be adapted to meet specific organisational needs and could be a vital component of in house staff training. Its real potential is as an organisational team training approach where practice methods would be aligned and consistent.
